Project Outline
Gallery Walk of Municipal Issues: Students will be introduced to teacher-collected articles and resources covering various municipal issues and they will choose their top three.
Groups: Students will be divided into interest groups, and will engage in deliberative research into their assigned issue.
Guided Research: Students will become experts on the issue by developing responses to the following guiding questions:
- What are the known facts of this issue?
- Who is impacted by this issue?
- What makes this a municipal election issue (as opposed to provincial or federal)?
- Who are the various stakeholders ?
- What are the different viewpoints?
Research Findings: Students will be responsible for providing their findings through a variety of teacher-approved methods (digital and formal)
Engagement Phase: In groups, students will generate a variety of questions to determine their understanding of their designated candidate's stance on the issue they have researched. Candidates will be invited to meet with the class to answer these questions and provide their insight into the issue. Questions and responses will be made public through this website for the community at large.
Reflection Phase: After engaging the Ward 11 candidates, students will submit a summative reflection on their learning. Reflection questions are designed to elicit feedback on the various skills, strategies and knowledge they demonstrated throughout the project.
