All four Grade 6 classes made valuable contributions to the success of our Student Vote election. We commandeered the Learning Commons and turned into an official voting station. Students adopted a variety of roles and kept the crowds of voters moving. We have collected and tallied all the votes and will be releasing the results after the actual vote. Stay tuned to see how our results compared to those of the legal voters.

The interviews with Janet Eremenko, Keith Simmons and Linda Johnson can be found below. The feature edited footage, but they should give you a good sense of where these three quality candidates stand on the issues our students researched. We were very fortunate to have Helen Pike, a member of the Metro News organization drop by our classroom to see what we have been up to in terms of the 2017 municipal election. She spoke with students about her role as a journalist and even agreed to come back to help us learn what it takes to write engaging news articles. The 6.2 and 6.4 classes welcomed Robert Dickinson to our class on Tuesday morning. The 6.4 focus groups led the Q&A session and asked important questions about issues that matter to Calgarians. The session was almost an hour, and Mr. Dickinson did a wonderful job of explaining his opinions and really helped our students understand why he held those opinions. Here is a highlight video of his visit to our school: This video will give you a look at the work we are doing ahead of our meetings with the candidates for the city council seat for Ward 11. Students are becoming experts on various issues by reading actual news articles about contemporary municipal issues ahead of next month's civic election. We will be posing questions to the candidates and asking them where they stand on these issues. It's inquiry in action. We have received a response from our fifth and final invitee to our project. Mr. Jeromy Farkas has a very busy schedule in the lead up to the election, but he has graciously agreed to visit our classrooms after the election has been decided. We are excited at the prospect of him sharing his campaign experience regardless of whether he ends up being successful in his bid to win the Ward 11council seat.
We are so proud and honoured that we have received confirmation from four of the five candidates vying for the Ward 11 council seat. We will be hosting them on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This means we have a lot of preparing to do! Students have been practicing how to navigate sophisticated news articles and we have done some work differentiating facts and opinions. Now the rubber will meet the road. Each group has been furnished with at least one quality article related to the issue they were interested in researching. The rest of this week will see them honing their knowledge on the issue while generating questions for each of the candidates. Now, we just need that last candidate to get back to us... A schedule of candidate visits can be viewed here. The article(s) students are using to kickstart their research can be viewed here.
